LOBSTER PLATTERS are one of the most frequently requested items in our shop in Maine, whether it is a tourist from Ohio, a summer resident from South Carolina, or a year-rounder who lobsters for a living.
We have found that PFA's ("persons from away") are just as drawn to our favorite crustacean as we Mainers are. These lobster platters, hand painted one at a time by a single artist, lend personality and attitude to the table. When not in use for serving, they often reside on a counter or atop a cabinet to decorate the kitchen.
Recently one of our friends ordered 16 dinner plates to match her lobster serving platter. Now we know our artist is doing something right!
Our artist, Donna Toohey, is a professional potter who resides on the East Coast, and paints each piece herself in her studio. All pieces are intended to be functional tableware. They are made of white earthenware clay, and are thrown, pressed, or slab-built. Before being fired, each piece is hand painted with an underglaze and covered in a clear glaze by the artist. Both underglaze and glaze are non-toxic. They are suitable for oven, microwave, and dishwasher.
