This extraordinary shell cameo was carved in Italy in the 1830's by an unknown master carver, evident in the brilliant execution of two full figure profiles representing two muses of antiquity. Two full figures are rarely found in cameos. That one of the figures is left-facing adds to the value. The cream and caramel colors in this exquisite cameo are quite remarkable and highlight the relief of the carving.
The cameo is in its original old English gold frame. No doubt this was a commissioned piece, carved in Italy, then taken to England where it was set.
The cameo in its frame measures 2 1/2" long x 2 3/8" wide.
The necklace is adjustable from 18" to 20 1/4" using a choice of five rings. Closure is a sterling silver toggle and ring. Width of the necklace is 1 1/4". Fine baroque pearls, sterling silver chain, white fresh water pearls.
