This rare museum-quality angel skin coral cameo was carved in the 1880's. It is set in its original carved 9k gold English frame. It was undoubtedly a commissioned piece, ordered in Italy, then taken to England where it was set. Depicted is the virginal Diana, goddess of the wilderness, the hunt, and fertility.
The angel skin coral used to carve this cameo probably came from the sea near Naples, Italy. This pale pink shade is one of the most valued of colors of coral. The carved figure in the cameo is almost white at the top of its projection, with most of the pink tone found at the edges of the carving.
The cameo is 1 3/8" long x " long x 1 to 1 1/8" wide. The total finished length, including stones and bale is about 3". The sterling silver bale is set with pink tourmaline and white pearls. The whiteness of the pearls speak to the purity of the goddess. The sterling silver back is decorated with an openwork filigree applique and bears the Mars & Valentine logo.
