This piece, housed in its original English Rose gold frame, was carved in Italy in the mid 1800's. (Gold from this era can range anywhere from 9k to 12k). It was undoubtedly a commissioned piece, carved in Italy while the owner was on the Grand Tour, then taken to England where it was set. We seldom see shell cameo pendants from Mars & Valentine; usually they are offered to us strung as necklaces, so this is a rare opportunity. (The pearls shown are not included; they do, however, give an idea of the space available inside the bale for one's own necklace.) The cameo in its frame is 1 7/8" long x 1 5/8" wide. Total finished length including the elaborate three-ring bale is 3 1/2". | |||
