This 1860's vulcanite cameo depicts the goddess Venus in a beautiful, contemplative aspect. The 3-D detail of the piece is quite spectacular. Vulcanite, like other forms of black jewelry, was the height of fashion between 1860 and 1890 in Victorian England.
The cameo is set in sterling silver and is beautifully accentuated by the elegant and bold drusy and pearl necklace. These natural black and white drusy stones are extremely rare today. See the close-up pictures below for detail of both colors. The pearls are large and lustrous.
The cameo is 2 1/4' long x nearly 2" wide. The blue topaz and sterling silver drop beneath the cameo measures 3/4" diameter. The necklace is 21 3/4" long, not including the cameo. Total length with the cameo is 24". The drusy stones range between 1 1/4" and 1 1/2" and the pearls in their sterling silver setting measure nearly 1" in diameter.
All the elements are fully backed in substantial sterling silver.
Closure is a toggle and ring with a large coin pearl drop.
